The Heavy Metal Origins: Great White’s Self-Titled Debut (EYS-81643)

Today’s entry looks at the aggressive beginnings of the band that would rule the airwaves in the late 80s. We are examining the 1984 Japanese White Label Promo pressing of Great White (Self-Titled), released on EMI America with the catalog number EYS-81643.

Raw Energy and Wagener Production

Released in 1984, this debut album captures Great White in their earliest incarnation, playing a much harder, faster style of heavy metal compared to the blues-rock sound they would later perfect. Produced by the legendary Michael Wagener (known for his work with Dokken, Accept, and Skid Row), the album is a slab of raw power. It features the driving opener “Out Of The Night,” the anthemic “Stick It,” and a heavy-handed cover of The Who’s “Substitute.” Vocalist Jack Russell displays a grittier delivery here, while guitarist Mark Kendall delivers high-speed riffs that reflect the “L.A. Metal” scene of the early 80s.

Exclusive White Label Promo

This specific copy is a highly collectible Promo Sample. It distinguishes itself from the standard retail release in two key ways. First, the vinyl disc bears the clean, text-only White Labels with the Japanese characters for “Sample (Not For Sale),” ensuring it was one of the earliest pressings off the line. Second, a “Sample” sticker is affixed to the front cover, a specific placement often used for promotional copies sent to radio DJs for quick identification.

Premium Japanese Packaging

Manufactured by Toshiba EMI, the packaging is notable for its quality. The jacket features an embossed cover, giving the band’s logo a tactile, 3D feel. The release is complete with the original Obi strip and a deluxe 4-page picture/lyric insert, preserving the full visual experience of the band’s debut era.
