The Red Rocker Live: Sammy Hagar’s ‘Live 1980’ (ECS-63048)
Today’s entry captures the raw, high-energy performance of the “Red Rocker” just before his global explosion. We are examining the 1983 Japanese White Label Promo pressing of Live 1980 by Sammy Hagar, released on Capitol Records with the catalog number ECS-63048.
Hammersmith Hard Rock
Although recorded in 1980 at London’s legendary Hammersmith Odeon, this specific album was released in Japan in 1983. It documents Hagar at the peak of his early solo career, backed by a formidable band including future Boston guitarist Gary Pihl, bassist Bill Church, and drummer Chuck Ruff. The setlist is a powerhouse of American hard rock, featuring the driving anthem “Trans Am (Highway Wonderland),” the fan-favorite “Love Or Money,” and a blistering rendition of the Montrose classic “Space Station #5.” It serves as a perfect snapshot of Hagar’s intensity as a frontman prior to his VOA success and eventual tenure in Van Halen.
Exclusive White Label Promo
This specific copy is a highly collectible Promo Sample. Unlike standard commercial copies, the vinyl disc features clean, text-only White Labels bearing the Japanese characters for “Sample (Not For Sale).” These promotional copies were originally distributed to radio stations and industry critics and are highly prized for their rarity. Additionally, a numbered “Sample” sticker is affixed to the back cover, verifying its non-retail status.
Complete Japanese Packaging
Manufactured by Toshiba EMI, the pressing quality is excellent. The release comes complete with the original Obi strip and an insert containing lyrics and extensive Japanese liner notes by renowned rock journalist Yuichi Masuda. It is a pristine archival copy for fans of high-octane 80s rock.
