Shred Metal Excess: Vinnie Vincent Invasion’s ‘All Systems Go’ (RP28-5614)
Today’s entry focuses on a high-octane release from the late 80s glam metal scene, featuring one of the most controversial and talented guitarists to ever grace the stage with Kiss. We are examining the 1988 Japanese Promo Sample pressing of All Systems Go by Vinnie Vincent Invasion, released on Chrysalis Records with the catalog number RP28-5614.
The Birth of a New Era
Released in 1988, All Systems Go was the second and final studio album from the band led by former Kiss guitarist Vinnie Vincent. While the debut album was known for its unbridled speed and chaotic production, this sophomore effort saw the band pivoting toward a more polished, radio-friendly sound without completely abandoning Vincent’s signature lightning-fast fretwork. A pivotal moment in rock history, this album marked the debut of vocalist Mark Slaughter, whose soaring, high-pitched voice provided the perfect counterpoint to the heavy instrumentation.
The tracklist is a showcase of late 80s hard rock at its most extravagant. Songs like “Ashes To Ashes” and “Naughty Naughty” combine catchy hooks with aggressive guitar solos, while the power ballad “Love Kills” appeared on the soundtrack for A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, earning the band significant MTV airplay. The rhythm section is equally formidable, featuring bassist Dana Strum and drummer Bobby Rock. Historically, this album is significant as it planted the seeds for the band Slaughter; shortly after this release, Mark Slaughter and Dana Strum would leave to form their own multi-platinum group.
Japanese Promo Rarity
This specific item is a highly collectible Promo Sample manufactured by Toshiba EMI Ltd. Promotional copies from Japan are renowned for their quality, often being the very first discs pressed from the master plates. This copy is distinguished by a numbered “Sample” sticker affixed to the back cover, and the disc labels bear the Japanese characters for “Sample (Not For Sale),” differentiating it from the standard retail version found in stores at the time.
Complete Collector’s Packaging
The presentation of this Japanese pressing is top-tier. It comes complete with the original Obi strip, a vital component for serious collectors that adds significant value to the package. Additionally, the release includes a lyric insert featuring English lyrics and Japanese text, offering a complete archival view of this fleeting but impactful moment in heavy metal history.
