The Controversial Sophomore Album: Heart’s ‘Magazine’ (ECS-70192)
Today’s entry looks at the album born from one of rock’s most famous legal battles. We are examining the 1986 Japanese Promo Sample reissue of Magazine by Heart, released on Capitol Records with the catalog number ECS-70192.
A Turbulent Creation
Originally released in an unfinished form by Mushroom Records in 1977 against the band’s wishes, this authorized version (represented by this high-quality 1986 reissue) features the polished mix the band intended. The tracklist is a fascinating hybrid of studio craft and live energy. Side A features the hard-rocking hit “Heartless” and a powerful cover of Badfinger’s “Without You.” Side B showcases the band’s early stage prowess with tracks recorded live at The Aquarius in Seattle, including “Mother Earth Blues” and the Kiki Dee cover “I’ve Got The Music In Me.”
Rare White Label Promo
This specific copy is a Promo Sample of the mid-80s reissue. It is distinguished by the clean White Labels on the disc, a feature reserved for promotional copies sent to radio stations and reviewers. The back cover is also affixed with a “Sample” sticker, verifying its status as a non-retail copy.
Japanese Quality
Manufactured by Toshiba EMI, this pressing ensures high-fidelity playback. It comes complete with the original Obi strip and a lyric insert, making it a pristine archival copy for collectors of the Wilson sisters’ early work.
