UFO’s 80s Reinvention: ‘Misdemeanor’ (WWS-91153)
Today’s entry focuses on a fascinating chapter in the saga of British hard rock legends UFO. We are examining the 1985 Japanese Promo Sample pressing of Misdemeanor, released on the Chrysalis label with the catalog number WWS-91153.
A New Lineup and Sound
Released on December 21, 1985, this album marks a significant rebirth for the band. After the dissolution of the classic lineup, vocalist Phil Mogg assembled a new group featuring the flashy guitar work of “Atomic” Tommy M and bassist Paul Gray (formerly of The Damned). The result is a distinct shift towards the melodic, polished hard rock sound that dominated the mid-80s. Tracks like “This Time” and “Night Run” showcase catchy choruses and atmospheric keyboards, offering a sleek update to the band’s traditional heavy rock style.
Rare White Label Promo
This specific copy is a collector’s Promo Sample, featuring the highly desirable White Labels on the disc, which bear the release date and the Japanese “Mihon” (Sample) characters. The back cover is also marked with a “Sample (Not For Sale)” sticker, distinguishing it from the standard retail release.
Japanese Quality and Packaging
Manufactured by Toshiba EMI, the pressing quality is excellent, capturing the album’s crisp 80s production. The release comes complete with the original Obi strip and a picture/lyric insert that includes liner notes by renowned Japanese rock critic Masa Itoh. It is a vital document of the era when UFO adapted their sound for the arena rock generation.
