25 Years of Controlled Chaos: Meshuggah’s ‘Chaosphere’ (AF0109V)

Today’s entry celebrates the silver anniversary of a landmark album in technical metal history. We are looking at the 2023 reissue of Chaosphere by Meshuggah, released on Atomic Fire with the catalog number AF0109V.

The Blueprint of Math-Metal

Originally unleashed in 1998, Chaosphere is the album where Meshuggah fully shed their thrash roots and solidified the mechanical, polyrhythmic sound that would eventually spawn the “djent” genre. Unlike the slower, groovier tempos of their later work, this album is defined by its relentless, frantic speed. Tracks like the iconic “New Millennium Cyanide Christ” and the chaotic opener “Concatenation” showcase the band’s inhuman precision. This 25th Anniversary edition celebrates a record that sounded like the future when it came out and remains unmatched in its intensity today.

Remastered Audio

For this special release, the audio has been given a significant update. The album was remastered for its 25th anniversary by Sofia Von Hage at Stockholm Mastering, with specific remastering for the vinyl format handled by Thomas Eberger. This ensures that the dense, complex layers of Fredrik Thordendal’s guitars and Tomas Haake’s drumming are presented with maximum clarity and punch.

Format and Aesthetics

This reissue is presented as a deluxe double LP set, allowing the tracks to breathe across four sides of wax. The pressing itself is a visual treat, featuring Bi-colour Green and White vinyl. The packaging features updated artwork by Luminokaya, staying true to the band’s dark, sci-fi aesthetic.

Quality Manufacturing

Collectors will appreciate the attention to manufacturing detail. The runout matrices indicate that this release was pressed at Schallplattenfabrik Pallas GmbH in Germany, a plant renowned for producing some of the quietest and highest-quality vinyl records in the world. The release comes with a hype sticker on the shrink wrap, confirming its status as the limited 25th Anniversary variant.
