Neoclassical Gold: Yngwie Malmsteen’s ‘Odyssey’ (835 451-1)

Today’s entry highlights the most commercially successful chapter in the career of the Swedish guitar virtuoso. We are looking at the original 1988 US pressing of Odyssey by Yngwie J. Malmsteen’s Rising Force, released on Polydor with the catalog number 835 451-1.

Shred Meets AOR

Released in 1988 following Malmsteen’s recovery from a near-fatal car accident, Odyssey marked a shift toward a more radio-friendly sound without sacrificing the neoclassical fury he was famous for. This was largely due to the recruitment of vocalist Joe Lynn Turner (formerly of Rainbow and Deep Purple). Turner’s soulful, melodic delivery provided the perfect counterpoint to Malmsteen’s lightning-fast arpeggios. The album spawned the band’s biggest hit, “Heaven Tonight,” alongside the power metal anthem “Rising Force” and the epic instrumental “Krakatau.”

A Stellar Lineup

Beyond the dynamic duo of Malmsteen and Turner, the album features a powerhouse rhythm section. Brothers Jens Johansson (keyboards) and Anders Johansson (drums) return, providing the complex backbone the music requires. Veteran bassist Bob Daisley also contributes to several tracks, further solidifying the supergroup feel of this recording.

Production and Manufacturing

The technical specs of this US pressing are impressive. The album was mixed by the legendary team of Steve Thompson and Michael Barbiero, known for their work with Guns N’ Roses and Tesla. The audio was mastered by the renowned Bob Ludwig at Masterdisk, ensuring a punchy and clear dynamic range.

Packaging

The release is housed in a standard jacket featuring the iconic Fender Stratocaster artwork. It includes a printed inner sleeve containing lyrics, credits, and a photo of the band.
