Grand Funk’s Soulful Evolution: ‘Phoenix’ (ECP-80662)
Today’s entry marks a major turning point for the American power trio. We are examining the 1972 Japanese pressing of Phoenix by Grand Funk (credited here simply as Grand Funk), released on Capitol Records as part of the popular “Rock Now” series with the catalog number ECP-80662.
Expanding the Sound
Released on November 5, 1972, Phoenix sees the band expanding their sonic palette beyond the raw, heavy stomp of their earlier records. Self-produced by the band, the album features the prominent addition of keyboardist Craig Frost (credited here as a session musician before officially joining the lineup), who adds layers of organ, clavinet, and piano. This shift towards a more polished, soulful rock sound is evident in the driving title track “Flight Of The Phoenix” and the enduring anthem “Rock ’N Roll Soul.” It bridges the gap between their garage roots and the massive radio success that would follow with We’re An American Band.
Toshiba Musical Industries Pressing
Manufactured by Toshiba Musical Industries Ltd. (Toshiba Onko), this release dates from the era before the company rebranded to Toshiba EMI, adding a touch of historical significance for label collectors. The record is housed in a classic Gatefold Sleeve featuring the album’s distinctive artwork.
Inclusions
This copy comes with the lyric insert, essential for following Mark Farner’s introspective songwriting on this transitional record.
