The Blueprint of Blues Rock: Free’s ‘Tons Of Sobs’ (ILPS 9089)

Today’s entry takes us back to the raw, unfiltered beginnings of one of Britain’s most influential bands. We are examining a 1973 UK reissue of Free’s debut album, Tons Of Sobs, released on Island Records with the catalog number ILPS 9089.

Raw, Earthy Blues

Originally released in 1969 when the band members were still teenagers, Tons Of Sobs captures Free at their most elemental. Produced by the eccentric Guy Stevens, the album is a showcase for the minimalist, “less is more” approach that defined their sound. It features the soulful, gritty vocals of Paul Rodgers and the distinctive, sorrowful vibrato of guitarist Paul Kossoff. Tracks like “The Hunter,” “Worry,” and “Moonshine” display a maturity and heaviness that belied their young age, laying the groundwork for the hard rock explosion of the 70s.

The “Pink Rim” Pressing

For collectors, the label variation is a key identifier. This copy features the “Pink Rim” Island label design (with the palm tree image), which was the standard design for the label during the early-to-mid 1970s.

The “Porky” Cut

A significant detail for audiophiles is found in the dead wax. The runout grooves feature the etched signatures “PORKY” on Side A and “PECKO” on Side B. These indicate that the lacquer was cut by the legendary engineer George Peckham. Peckham’s cuts are renowned for their punch, volume, and dynamic range, ensuring this pressing delivers the heavy blues rock sound with maximum impact.

Sleeve Variations

The album is housed in a gatefold sleeve. This specific variation is distinguished by the text “ILPS 9089 STEREO” printed in the top right corner of the back cover, and a large white “i” logo at the bottom center. Additionally, the cover print credit goes to Robor Ltd., differentiating it from similar versions printed by Ernest J. Day & Co.
