Symphonic Darkness: Draconicon’s ‘Pestilence’ (IW83112)

Today’s entry explores a theatrical and orchestral take on power metal. We are looking at the 2023 limited edition vinyl release of Pestilence by Draconicon, released on Inner Wound Recordings with the catalog number IW83112.

Orchestral Power Metal

Released in November 2023, Pestilence delivers a heavy dose of dark, symphonic power metal. The album’s soundscape is significantly enriched by the orchestration of Francesco Ferrini (known for his work with Fleshgod Apocalypse) and the inclusion of Simon Borgen on violin, adding a distinct layer of sophistication to the heavy riffs provided by guitarists Alex Moth and Grym Hünter. Vocalist Arkanfel leads the charge through tracks that explore grim themes, from “Twisted Reflection” and “Heresy” to the dramatic “Theatre of Sorrow” and “Circus of the Dead.” The album closes with the ambitious track “Faust.”

Visuals and Production

The album features striking artwork by Dan Goldsworthy, which is showcased on the cover and the accompanying printed insert containing lyrics and photos. The production credits are extensive, with mixing and mastering handled by Marco Mastrobuono and Alessandro Mammola, ensuring the complex arrangements are clear and powerful.

Format and Limitation

This release is strictly limited to 300 copies worldwide, a fact highlighted by the hype sticker on the front of the resealable polybag. The record itself is pressed on heavyweight black vinyl and comes housed in a high-quality black poly-lined inner sleeve, a detail often appreciated by audiophiles for better record preservation. The release was manufactured in Estonia.
