The Demos Behind the Anthem: Autograph’s ‘The Anthology’ (CLO 2353)
Today’s entry dives into the archives of the band responsible for one of the quintessential 80s hard rock anthems. We are looking at the 2021 double vinyl compilation The Anthology by Autograph, released on Cleopatra Records / Deadline Music.
A Treasure Trove of Rarities
This release is a must-have for dedicated fans, compiling rare demos and alternate takes recorded between 1983 and 1988. Effectively serving as a vinyl highlight reel from the now out-of-print 2CD anthology, it offers a raw look at the band’s development. It features the original studio demos that helped secure their major label deal with RCA in 1984, including early versions of their monster hit Turn Up The Radio and the fan favorite Send Her To Me.
The Music
Spanning two LPs, the tracklist covers the band’s golden era. In addition to the demo recordings of their classic tracks, the collection includes unique rarities on Side D, such as an Unplugged version and an Alternate Electric Version of Turn Up The Radio. It showcases the technical prowess of guitarist Steve Lynch and vocalist Steve Plunkett in a slightly more stripped-back setting than their polished studio albums.
Format
This compilation is presented as a deluxe 2-LP set pressed on vivid Blue Vinyl.
Packaging
The packaging is designed with the collector in mind, featuring a sleeve adorned with many previously unreleased photos of the band. New copies come with a hype sticker on the shrink wrap highlighting the rare material contained within.
