Showcasing Guitar Prowess: Akira Takasaki’s ‘Tusk of Jaguar’ (AF-7115-B)
Let’s spotlight the impressive debut solo album from Loudness guitarist and Japanese guitar legend, Akira Takasaki. This is “Tusk of Jaguar” (ジャガーの牙), released April 1, 1982, on the B&M label (Nippon Columbia) with catalog number AF-7115-B. This copy includes the original obi strip.
Arriving during Loudness’ rapid ascent, this album offered Takasaki a space to explore his own musical ideas beyond the band context. Sound produced alongside Masanori Sasaji (who also handled keyboards), “Tusk of Jaguar” is a dynamic showcase of Takasaki’s already formidable technique and compositional range.
While primarily rooted in hard rock and heavy metal, the album demonstrates Takasaki’s creative freedom. It features a compelling mix of instrumental tracks (like the title cut, “Macula,” “Gunshots,” “Say What?”) that highlight his incredible skill and signature tone, alongside songs featuring vocals. Loudness bandmate Minoru Niihara lends his voice to “Steal Away” and “Show Me Something Good,” while Takasaki himself takes the lead vocal on “Ebony Eyes.”
The album benefits immensely from the support of Takasaki’s Loudness colleagues Munetaka Higuchi (drums) and Masayoshi Yamashita (bass) on multiple tracks, cementing its connection to the core Loudness sound. However, contributions from other musicians like violinist Toshihiro Nakanishi (“Wild Boogie Run”) hint at the broader musical palette Takasaki explored. Recorded at Nippon Columbia and Studio Birdman, the album captures the energy and precision of these collaborations.
“Tusk of Jaguar” (AF-7115-B) stands as a testament to Akira Takasaki’s early virtuosity and musical vision. It’s an essential listen for fans wanting to fully appreciate his guitar mastery and compositional explorations, filled with stunning technique and representing a key solo statement from a true guitar hero.
