Anglo-German Metal Alliance: Raven & Udo’s ‘Break The Chain’ (RR 12.55.25)
Today’s entry features a high-powered collaboration between NWOBHM lunatics and a German metal legend. We are looking at the 1983 Benelux 12-inch maxi-single Break The Chain by Raven featuring Udo Dirkschneider, released on Roadrunner/Neat Records with the catalog number RR 12.55.25.
A Meeting of Metal Minds
Released during the cycle for their classic All for One album, this single represents a unique crossover. Produced by Michael Wagener and Udo Dirkschneider of Accept fame, it brings a tight, crushing German production style to Raven’s chaotic athletic rock.
The Tracks
The A-side features the anthemic Break The Chain. However, the real draw for many fans is on the B-side. It features a raucous cover of Steppenwolf’s Born To Be Wild, where Udo Dirkschneider takes on guest vocals, trading lines with the Gallagher brothers. The flip side is rounded out by the speed metal track Inquisitor.
Collector’s Details
This specific pressing was manufactured for the Benelux market (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg) by Roadrunner Productions under license from Neat Records.
Label Error
This version is notorious among collectors for a printing error on the silver labels. While the actual catalog number for this release in the Neat chronology should be NEAT 28, the inner labels mistakenly list it as NEAT 29 (which was actually assigned to a single by the band Tank).
Format
Presented as a 45 RPM 12-inch single, this format offers superior audio quality and volume compared to the standard 7-inch, doing justice to the heavy production work.
