Iron Maiden’s Non-Album Classic: ‘Women In Uniform’ (12EMI 5105)

Today’s entry looks at a unique piece of early Iron Maiden history. We are examining the 1980 UK 12-inch single Women In Uniform, released on EMI with the catalog number 12EMI 5105.

A Rare Cover Song

Released in late 1980, this single stands out in the Maiden discography for being a cover of the Australian band Skyhooks. It was the band’s third single and notably the last recording to feature guitarist Dennis Stratton before Adrian Smith joined the fold. The cover artwork is legendary, featuring Margaret Thatcher (the “Iron Maiden” herself) waiting in ambush for Eddie with a submachine gun, a direct sequel to the controversy of the Sanctuary single cover.

The Music

While the A-side offers a catchy, hard-rocking departure from their usual style, the B-sides are where the true heavy metal lies for die-hard fans. It features Invasion, a high-energy re-recording of a track that originally appeared on their legendary Soundhouse Tapes demo. However, the real gem is the B-side track Phantom Of The Opera, recorded live at the Marquee Club in London on July 4, 1980. This recording captures the raw, sweat-soaked intensity of the band’s early club days.

Collector’s Details

The 12-inch format was the preferred choice for metal DJs and audiophiles of the era.

Format:
This is a 12-inch Single playing at 45 RPM. The larger groove width allows for a louder, more dynamic cut compared to the standard 7-inch version, giving the bass and drums significantly more punch.

Labels:
The record features the classic EMI Purple label with silver text, a standard design for the company’s UK releases during this period.

Matrix:
The runout grooves on this pressing contain the matrix numbers 12 EMI 5105 A-4 on Side A and 12EMI 5105 B 1U on Side B, identifying it as an authentic UK pressing.
