Technical Thrash Masterpiece: Holy Terror’s ‘Mind Wars’ (FLAG 25)

Today’s entry focuses on a cult classic from the golden age of speed and thrash metal. We are looking at the 1988 UK pressing of Mind Wars by the American band Holy Terror, released on the legendary Under One Flag label with the catalog number FLAG 25.

A Thrash Metal Landmark

Released in 1988, Mind Wars is widely considered the band’s magnum opus and a high-water mark for technical thrash metal. Led by guitarist Kurt Kilfelt (formerly of Agent Steel) and the late, great vocalist Keith Deen, the album is a tour de force of speed, aggression, and melody. Deen’s vocal performance is legendary within the genre for its manic intensity and unique range, shifting seamlessly from aggressive shouts to melodic singing.

The Music

The album opens with the galloping “Judas Reward” and never lets up. Tracks like “The Immoral Wasteland” and “Christian Resistance” showcase intricate riffing and complex song structures that border on progressive metal without losing their punk-infused energy. The centerpiece of Side A is the ambitious three-part suite ending with the title track “Mind Wars,” demonstrating the band’s sophisticated songwriting capabilities.

Collector’s Details

Under One Flag, a subsidiary of Music For Nations, was the premier home for thrash metal in the UK during the late 80s, and this release is a staple of their catalog.

Pressing:
Like many Music For Nations/Under One Flag releases of this era, this record was Made in France by the MPO pressing plant. Collectors can confirm this by looking for “MPO” etched in the runout grooves, a hallmark of quality pressings from this period.

Packaging:
The album was issued with a printed inner sleeve featuring full lyrics, liner notes, and band photos, which is essential for a complete copy. The evocative cover artwork was created by Rick Araluce.

Production:
The audio was mastered by the legendary Bernie Grundman, ensuring that the dynamic range and sonic assault of the recording are preserved on the vinyl.
