French Metal Masterpiece: Sortilège’s ‘Métamorphose’ (BRC 1914)

Today’s entry crosses the Atlantic to look at a Canadian pressing of a French heavy metal classic. We are examining the 1984 album Métamorphose by Sortilège, released on the cult label Banzai Records with the catalog number BRC 1914.

The Crown Jewel of French Metal

Often cited as the greatest French heavy metal album ever recorded, Métamorphose captures a band at the peak of their powers. Led by the incredible vocalist Christian “Zouille” Augustin, whose high-pitched delivery rivals Rob Halford or King Diamond, the band blended technical precision with distinctively French melodic sensibilities. Unlike many of their peers who sang in English to appeal to a wider market, Sortilège performed in their native tongue, giving the music a unique, poetic quality.

The Tracks

The album opens with the driving D’ailleurs and the regal anthem Majesté. The songwriting is sophisticated throughout, evident in the emotional build of Delire D’un Fou (Delirium of a Madman) and the progressive touches of the title track Métamorphose. The guitar work is fluid and neoclassical, setting a high standard for the European metal scene of the mid-80s.

Collector’s Details

This specific version is the Canadian edition released by Banzai Records, a label famous among collectors for licensing top-tier metal for the North American market during the 80s.

Artwork:
The striking cover art was created by Philippe Druillet, a legendary French comics artist and co-founder of Metal Hurlant magazine (Heavy Metal), adding a sci-fi fantasy aesthetic that perfectly matches the music.

Label:
Banzai Records pressings are known for their distinctive branding. The vinyl labels on this release are marked “This Side” and “That Side” instead of the standard Side A and Side B.

Packaging:
This pressing was issued with a double-sided printed inner sleeve containing the French lyrics, which is essential for a complete copy.
