The Thundersteel Reunion: Riot’s ‘Immortal Soul’ (SPV 309871)
Today’s entry pays tribute to one of the most emotional and triumphant releases in heavy metal history. We are looking at the 2011 limited edition vinyl of Immortal Soul by the legendary Riot, released on the German label Steamhammer with the catalog number SPV 309871 2LP.
The Final Chapter of a Legend
Immortal Soul holds a sacred place in the hearts of Riot fans for two reasons. First, it marked the long-awaited reunion of the celebrated “Thundersteel” era lineup: vocalist Tony Moore, bassist Don Van Stavern, drummer Bobby Jarzombek, and founding guitarist Mark Reale (joined by Mike Flyntz). Second, and tragically, it stands as the final studio album to feature Mark Reale, who passed away shortly after its release in early 2012.
The Music
Musically, the album is a masterclass in US power metal, effortlessly recapturing the magic of the late 80s. It opens with the self-titled anthem “Riot,” a statement of intent that proves the band hadn’t lost a step. Speed metal stormers like “Wings Are For Angels” and “Sins Of The Father” sit alongside melodic hard rock tracks like “Still Your Man” and “Whiskey Man.” The production, handled by Bruno Ravel (of Danger Danger fame), is crisp and modern while respecting the band’s classic sound.
Collector’s Details
Steamhammer provided a high-quality presentation for this European pressing, making it a fitting farewell to Reale’s legacy.
Format: This is the Limited Edition version pressed on Blue Vinyl, spread across two LPs to ensure maximum audio fidelity for the 12 tracks.
Packaging: The records are housed in a high-quality gatefold sleeve and include printed inner sleeves containing lyrics and artwork. Copies typically come with a hype sticker on the front cover.
Production: The vinyl lacquer was cut by KM at Celebrate Records GmbH, ensuring the transfer from the digital mix to the analog groove remained powerful and dynamic.
This album is not just a collection of songs; it is the final testament of one of the most underrated guitar heroes in metal history.
