NWOBHM Origins: Overdrive’s ‘On Wizard Ridge’ (HRR 012)
Today’s entry takes us back to the very early days of the High Roller Records catalog. We are looking at the 2007 release On Wizard Ridge by the British band Overdrive, released with the catalog number HRR 012.
A NWOBHM Time Capsule
It is important to distinguish this band from the Swedish heavy metal band of the same name. This Overdrive hails from Grantham, UK, and was active during the golden era of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. On Wizard Ridge was originally released as a self-financed cassette demo in 1981. This vinyl release by High Roller officially put these recordings onto wax for the first time, preserving a raw and authentic slice of metal history.
The Music
The sound is quintessential grassroots NWOBHM—energetic, slightly rough around the edges, and full of passion. Tracks like “Nuclear Bomb” and “Stonehenge” display the band’s naive but heavy charm, while the title track “On Wizard Ridge” showcases their attempt at more epic storytelling. It captures the spirit of a local band aiming for the big time during the early 80s metal explosion.
Collector’s Details
Limitation: It was pressed in a strict limited edition of 500 copies. Packaging: The album comes with a printed inner sleeve featuring lyrics and photos, adding historical context to these archival recordings. As one of the earliest releases from High Roller Records (catalog number 12), this LP is highly sought after by completists of the label.
For fans of deep-cut NWOBHM and the history of High Roller Records, this is a foundational piece of the puzzle.
