French AOR with a California Touch: Stress – ‘Search For The Fool’ (NW 2311)
Today’s entry highlights an obscure but fascinating slice of mid-80s melodic rock. We are looking at the 1985 12-inch maxi-single Search For The Fool / You’re So Critical by the band Stress, released on the French label New Records with the catalog number NW 2311.
The Trans-Atlantic Connection
While this record was released and distributed in France (via Mélodie Distribution), the production history reveals an interesting cross-continental backstory. The tracks were actually recorded and mixed at Circle Sound in San Diego, California. The project was led by bassist and producer Josquin Turenne Des Pres (often credited simply as Josquin Des Pres), who would later go on to become a renowned session musician and author of numerous instructional bass books.
The Music
Musically, this release fits firmly into the AOR and melodic hard rock style of the mid-80s. Side A features the punchy “Search For The Fool,” co-written by guitarist Tim Nicholson. Despite being a 12-inch release, the track is surprisingly concise at just 2:40. Side B offers the longer cut “You’re So Critical,” sung by Mike Thomas, which allows the band to stretch out a bit more with that polished, radio-ready California sound.
Collector’s Details
This 12-inch single runs at 45 RPM, ensuring high-fidelity playback with punchy dynamics. It is a unique item for collectors of “Westcoast” AOR-hard, representing a moment where American recording quality met French distribution. The cover art features photography by Nick Nacca, completing the professional package of this hidden gem.
