Canadian Speed Metal Party: Metalian’s ‘Rock Solid’ (HA5-5027-1)
Today’s entry heads north to Montreal to check out one of the most energetic bands of the modern traditional metal scene. We are looking at the 2011 mini-album Rock Solid by Metalian, released on the US label Heavy Artillery with the catalog number HA5-5027-1.
High-Voltage Canadian Steel
Metalian has built a reputation for delivering high-octane heavy metal that blends the speed of early Judas Priest with the rock ‘n’ roll swagger of Thin Lizzy. This release captures the band at their hungry best. Fronted by the charismatic Ian Wilson—known for his piercing falsettos and wild stage presence—the band tears through six tracks of pure metal fun.
Key Tracks
The EP features the galloping “Wasteland” and the aggressive “Sonic Attack,” both of which showcase the band’s dual-guitar proficiency. The closer, “Motor Maniac,” is a speed metal ripper that perfectly encapsulates the band’s drink-beer-and-play-loud philosophy.
Collector’s Details
This release on Heavy Artillery Records (a label that was crucial for the thrash/speed revival of the era) is a significant rarity for collectors. It was pressed in a strictly limited run of just 200 hand-numbered copies. The 12-inch format allows for a loud cut of these dynamic tracks, and the package includes a lyric sheet. It is a snapshot of the Canadian underground just before the band gained wider international recognition.
