Pre-NWOBHM Roots: Big Daisy & Jury (HRR 204)
Today’s entry unearths the deep roots of the British hard rock scene. We are looking at the 2012 archival compilation featuring Big Daisy and Jury, released by High Roller Records with the catalog number HRR 204.
The Merv “Spam” Spence Connection
This release serves as a historical document for the early career of Merv “Spam” Spence, a vocalist and bassist who would later go on to join legendary acts like Trapeze and Wishbone Ash. The album compiles recordings from two of his pre-fame bands, offering a glimpse into the transition from late 70s hard rock to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.
The Music
The majority of the album (Side A and the first three tracks of Side B) is dedicated to Big Daisy. Tracks like “Fever” and “Footprints On The Water” showcase a melodic, slightly progressive hard rock sound that highlights Spence’s distinct vocal ability and Roger Fox’s guitar work. The final two tracks on Side B, “Having A Party” and “Don’t Go,” feature the band Jury, capturing a similar spirit of the era. This is less about aggressive speed metal and more about the melodic, song-oriented rock that underpinned the genre.
Collector’s Details
As with most High Roller releases, the audio restoration is top-notch, having been remastered by Patrick W. Engel. This specific entry is the Black Vinyl edition, which was limited to 250 copies (a matching run of 250 white copies was also pressed). The record includes an insert and features artwork designed by Alexander von Wieding, making it a respectful and professional presentation of these rare, previously obscure recordings.
