Female-Fronted Metal Fury: Blacklace’s ‘Unlaced’ (SKULL 8348)

Today’s entry opens the crypt of one of the most iconic cult labels in heavy metal history. We are looking at the 1984 debut album Unlaced by the New York-based band Blacklace, released on the Belgian label Mausoleum Records with the catalog number SKULL 8348.

The Mausoleum Connection
While Blacklace hailed from New York, they found their home on Mausoleum Records, a label revered by collectors for its specific aesthetic and its dedication to 80s heavy metal. This release is part of the famous “SKULL” series, which is highly collectible today.

A Hidden Gem of US Metal
Fronted by the powerful vocalist Maryann Scandiffio, Blacklace delivered a gritty, aggressive brand of traditional heavy metal that often draws comparisons to contemporaries like Warlock (Doro Pesch) or Bitch. Scandiffio’s raspy, commanding voice gives the album a distinct edge.

A major highlight of this record is the involvement of Ross The Boss (the legendary guitarist of Manowar and The Dictators). He is credited with co-producing three tracks: the anthemic “Devil In Disguise,” “On The Attack,” and “Hots For You.” The album opens with the dramatic “March Of The Black Witch” and maintains a high-energy pace with tracks like “Call Of The Wild.”

Collector’s Details
SKULL 8348 is a standard Belgian pressing. Despite being an independent label release, the sonic quality is surprisingly high, as the album was originally mastered at the prestigious Sterling Sound in NYC by top-tier engineer Ted Jensen. The cover art, designed by Bob Reich, fits perfectly with the leather-and-chains aesthetic of the mid-80s underground scene.

This album is an essential pick for fans of female-fronted heavy metal and completists of the Mausoleum Records catalog.
