The Peak of the Boogie: Status Quo’s ‘Blue For You’ (9102 006)
Today’s entry focuses on a chart-topping classic from the British boogie rock kings, Status Quo. We are looking at the 1976 UK pressing of Blue For You, released on the Vertigo label with the catalog number 9102 006.
Released in March 1976, this album is a landmark in the band’s history. It was the final album produced by the band themselves and famously reached Number 1 on the UK Album Charts, cementing their dominance in the mid-70s. It features the classic “Frantic Four” lineup: Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt, Alan Lancaster, and John Coghlan.
The music is pure, unadulterated Quo: driving 12-bar boogie rhythms and hard-rocking energy. The album includes some of their most enduring hits, such as Rick Parfitt’s heavy rocker Rain and the dynamic Mystery Song, which features a slightly more complex structure than their standard fare. Other tracks like Is There A Better Way showcase their heavier side.
9102 006 is an essential vinyl for collectors of British rock. Typically housed in a gatefold sleeve that captures the band’s “denim and heads down” aesthetic, it represents the zenith of their classic hard rock era.
