A Prophetic Debut: Queensrÿche’s ‘The Warning’ (EJ 24 02201)

Today’s entry spotlights the debut full-length studio album from the progressive metal pioneers Queensrÿche. We are looking at the 1984 UK pressing of The Warning, released on the EMI America label with the catalog number EJ 24 02201.

Released on September 7, 1984, following their successful self-titled EP, this album saw the band expanding their sound significantly. While rooted in the heavy metal of the era, The Warning introduced the complex structures, high-concept themes, and atmospheric depth that would define the progressive metal genre.

The production pedigree is notable; the album was produced by James Guthrie, famous for his work with Pink Floyd (The Wall). This influence is evident in the album’s sonic clarity and use of sound effects. Additionally, the renowned Michael Kamen provided orchestral arrangements, adding a cinematic grandeur to tracks like the epic closer Roads To Madness.

The album features the classic lineup of Geoff Tate (vocals), Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton (guitars), Eddie Jackson (bass), and Scott Rockenfield (drums). Standout tracks include the driving opener Warning, the military-themed En Force, and the band’s early signature anthem Take Hold Of The Flame.

EJ 24 02201 is a high-quality UK pressing manufactured by EMI Records Ltd. (with Sonopress matrices). It comes complete with a printed picture and lyric inner sleeve. This album is an essential document for metal historians, capturing the moment Queensrÿche began to bridge the gap between traditional heavy metal and sophisticated progressive rock.
