Drawing the Line for Uncle Sam: Aerosmith’s ‘Draw The Line’ Government Issue (JC 34856)

Today’s entry spotlights a unique collector’s variation of Aerosmith’s fifth studio album, Draw The Line. We are looking at the 1977 US pressing released on Columbia Records with the catalog number JC 34856.

While millions of copies of this hard rock classic were sold, this particular LP features a distinct gold stamp on the back cover reading “for governmental sale only.” These copies were typically manufactured for sale at US military exchanges (PX/BX) or diplomatic posts overseas, offering a fascinating glimpse into the distribution history of the album.

Released in December 1977, Draw The Line was recorded during a chaotic period for the band at The Cenacle, a former convent in New York. Despite the internal turbulence, the album captures a raw, loose, and aggressive energy that fans adore.

The album features the iconic caricature cover art by Al Hirschfeld. Musically, it delivers the goods with the slide-guitar driven title track, the majestic and heavy Kings And Queens, and the raucous Bright Light Fright, which features Joe Perry taking over lead vocals. The band also revisits their roots with a cover of Milk Cow Blues.

JC 34856 with the government sale stamp is a cool artifact for Aerosmith collectors, representing a copy that likely traveled the world in the hands of a service member before finding its way back into circulation. It is a raw, authentic piece of 70s American hard rock history.
