Exploring the Mark II Era: Deep Purple’s ‘Fireball’ (BS 2564)
Today’s entry highlights a specific US pressing of Deep Purple’s fifth studio album, Fireball. This is a reissue released on Warner Bros. Records with the catalog number BS 2564.
This particular copy is distinguished by its “Burbank” labels, featuring the iconic palm tree lined street scene, a design used by Warner Bros. in the mid-to-late 70s. Collectors will note this variation specifically the word “STEREO” printed at the bottom of the labe.
Released originally in 1971, Fireball captures the legendary Mark II lineup (Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, Roger Glover, Ian Paice) exploring a more progressive and experimental sound following the hard rock explosion of In Rock.
Crucially for collectors, the US tracklist differs from the UK version. This pressing includes the hit single Strange Kind Of Woman as the third track on Side A, replacing Demon’s Eye which appeared on the British release. The album opens with the blistering speed of the title track, Fireball, and features fan favorites like the drum-showcase The Mule and the dynamic, heavy track Fools.
BS 2564 is a classic way to experience this essential chapter of Deep Purple’s history, offering the specific US track configuration and the vintage aesthetic of the Burbank era label.
