Today’s entry takes a journey into Middle Earth with a unique 2024 release from the UK band Riders Of Rohan. We are looking at their mini-LP “With Hope Or Without…”, released by the cult label Crypt Of The Wizard with the catalog number CRYPTMETAL021.
This release is a true rarity for collectors, being the first pressing on black vinyl and strictly limited to just 100 copies. It comes packaged with a double-sided insert.
Musically, the band anchors themselves in old-school rock and heavy metal but drifts into eclectic territories, incorporating elements of raucous new wave, post-punk, and even disco rock. The songwriting invokes the spirit of classic troubadours, with nods to Thin Lizzy influences on tracks like Ranger Song.
Lyrically, the album is a deep dive into J.R.R. Tolkien’s lore, moving beyond the standard War of the Ring themes. The songs explore specific character perspectives: If I Could Love deals with Sauron’s complex relationship with Morgoth, Evermind focuses on King Théoden’s grief and resolve, and To Name A Successor is sung from the perspective of the Ringwraith Khamûl the Easterling.
CRYPTMETAL021 is a fascinating, limited-run artifact for fans of fantasy-themed rock who appreciate a sound that blends classic heavy metal roots with alternative and wave influences.
