A Guitar Hero’s Final Era: Tommy Bolin Band’s ‘Live 9/19/76’ (FRM01976)

Today’s entry pays tribute to one of rock’s greatest and most tragic guitar legends, Tommy Bolin. We are looking at the 2023 limited edition vinyl release of “Live 9/19/76,” issued in the US by Friday Music with the catalog number FRM01976.

This release is a significant event for collectors as it marks the first-ever vinyl pressing of this specific concert recording. Captured in Albany, New York, on September 19, 1976—just months before his untimely death—this performance showcases Bolin at the height of his powers as a solo artist, following his high-profile tenures with Deep Purple, The James Gang, and Zephyr.

The album features Bolin leading a stellar backing band that includes Mark Stein (Vanilla Fudge) on keyboards, saxophonist Norma Jean Bell, bassist Jimmy Haslip, and his brother Johnnie Bolin on drums. Together, they deliver a genre-bending set that fuses hard rock, blues, and jazz-fusion. The tracklist includes blistering renditions of his solo classics like “Teaser,” “People, People,” “Shake The Devil,” and the epic “Post Toastee.”

Mastered by Joe Reagoso from the official Tommy Bolin Archives tapes, this edition is pressed on translucent red vinyl, adding to its collectible appeal. FRM01976 is a vital document of a virtuoso who influenced generations of guitarists, capturing the electric energy of his final tour in a high-quality format.
