Tracing the Path of a J-Metal Classic: Earthshaker’s ‘Midnight Flight’ (K28P488)
From the archives of Japanese hard rock, today we’re highlighting a truly iconic album from one of the scene’s most beloved bands: Earthshaker. This database entry is for the 12-inch vinyl LP of their third full-length album, ‘Midnight Flight,’ released with the catalog number K28P488.
Released in October 1984 on the Nexus label (distributed by King Records), ‘Midnight Flight’ holds an essential place in the history of “Japa-meta.” It arrived with incredible speed, hitting stores just seven months after their second album, ‘Fugitive,’ showcasing a band at a massive creative peak.
This is the album that truly cemented Earthshaker’s signature sound. While their early work was raw and powerful, ‘Midnight Flight’ perfected their formula of blending hard-driving heavy metal with profoundly emotional and memorable melodies. The classic lineup of Masafumi “MARCY” Nishida on vocals, Shinichiro “SHARA” Ishihara on guitar, Takayuki “KAI” Kai on bass, and Yoshihiro “KUDO” Kudo on drums was in top form.
The album kicks off with the energetic, crowd-pleasing anthem ‘T-O-K-Y-O’ and features the excellent title track ‘Midnight Flight.’ However, this LP is most famous for containing what is arguably the band’s signature song, ‘Radio Magic.’ This track, with its powerful chorus and soulful guitar work, became a timeless anthem for the entire Japanese hard rock scene.
More than just a record, K28P488 is a cornerstone of 80s Japanese rock, capturing a legendary band as they defined their sound and became superstars of the genre.
