A Snapshot of British Steel: The ‘Metallergy’ Compilation (JET MP 228)
Today’s entry takes us to the UK in 1980, right in the midst of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) era. We are looking at the compilation album “Metallergy,” released by Jet Records with the catalog number JET MP 228.
This 12-inch vinyl LP served as a showcase for the heavier side of the Jet Records roster, gathering tracks from four distinct bands that were making waves in the hard rock and metal scenes of the time. It offers a fascinating cross-section of styles, from gritty hard rock to progressive pomp and guitar virtuosity.
A major highlight for metal collectors is the inclusion of Quartz. The band contributes three tracks, including “Street Fighting Day” and “Devils Brew.” Notably, these tracks were produced by Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi, highlighting the band’s strong connection to the Birmingham metal lineage and the NWOBHM movement.
The compilation also features:
Magnum: Contributing their definitive anthem “Kingdom Of Madness” alongside “The Bringer,” showcasing their unique blend of hard rock and progressive rock.
Bernie Tormé: The guitar hero brings his high-energy, punk-infused electric sound with tracks like “Secret Service” and “Electricity.”
Widowmaker: This hard rock supergroup (which featured the likes of Bob Daisley and Luther Grosvenor) contributes three tracks, including “On The Road,” anchoring the collection with a classic 70s hard rock vibe.
JET MP 228 is a fantastic time capsule. It captures the diversity of the British hard rock scene around 1980, bringing together future legends and cult heroes on a single, cohesive release. For fans of NWOBHM and classic British rock, “Metallergy” remains a cool and collectible sampler.
