American Hard Rock Fire: Legs Diamond’s ‘Fire Power’ (CR-1010)

Today’s entry shifts focus to the American hard rock scene of the late 1970s, spotlighting the third studio album from the enduring band Legs Diamond. We are looking at “Fire Power,” released in the US on the Cream Records label with the catalog number CR-1010.

Issued in 1979, this 12-inch vinyl LP captures a band that built a dedicated cult following with their distinct blend of gritty hard rock and melodic, sometimes glam-influenced hooks. Legs Diamond occupied a unique space in the rock landscape, often bridging the gap between the heavy rock of the 70s and the emerging styles of the 80s.

“Fire Power” features the lineup of Rick Sanford on lead vocals, Roger Romeo on guitar, Mike Prince on keyboards, Michael Diamond on bass, and Jeff Poole on drums. The album delivers a solid collection of tracks, including the opener “Underworld King,” “Midnight Lady,” and “Tragedy.”

Interestingly, the band also includes a cover version of the Righteous Brothers’ classic “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” showcasing their ability to interpret standards within a hard rock framework. The interplay between Romeo’s guitar and Prince’s keyboards provides the band with a rich, textured sound that sets them apart from many of their guitar-only contemporaries.

CR-1010 is a solid representation of late 70s American hard rock. For collectors, this album documents a hardworking band that has maintained a loyal fanbase for decades. The original US release came packaged with a printed insert.
