A Final, Evolved Statement: X-Ray’s ‘Strike Back’ (CI-36)
Let’s explore the fourth and final studio album from the influential Japanese melodic heavy metal band X-Ray, titled “Strike Back.” Released in 1985 on the Continental label (Teichiku Records) with the catalog number CI-36, this 12-inch vinyl LP represents the culmination of the band’s musical journey. This particular copy retains its original outer shrinkwrap with the obisticker intact.
Following their highly regarded previous works, “Strike Back” showcased a band further evolving and refining its sound. While their roots were firmly in heavy metal, this album saw X-Ray moving away from traditional metal aesthetics and embracing a sound that incorporated an even stronger pop sensibility into their powerful heavy metal framework.
Despite the sadness of it being their final release, “Strike Back” is widely considered a masterpiece filled with exceptionally well-crafted songs. It captures the band at a peak of musical maturity, delivering their signature blend of soaring vocals, skillful guitar work, and tight rhythms, all wrapped in polished, accessible, and highly melodic arrangements.
CI-36 stands as a significant final chapter for X-Ray. It’s a high point in 80s Japanese melodic metal, documenting the band’s ultimate sonic evolution and leaving fans with a classic, high-quality album.
