Taking Aim with a Straightforward Sound: Blizard’s ‘Hot Shot!’ (K-12518)

Let’s examine the third studio album from Japanese heavy metal band Blizard, titled “Hot Shot!”. Released on July 25, 1985, via the Atlantic label (Warner-Pioneer Corporation), this 12-inch vinyl LP carries the catalog number K-12518 and includes its original obi strip, housed in an embossed cover.

“Hot Shot!” marked a noticeable stylistic shift for Blizard compared to their first two dramatic, concept-heavy albums. This release saw the band embracing a more direct, straightforward hard rock sound, reportedly with a conscious focus on creating songs easily reproducible in a live concert setting. While still rooted in heavy metal, the album incorporates more accessible melodies and catchier choruses, leading some to describe it as having a more “pop” sensibility within their discography.

Produced during the peak of the J-Metal era, the album features popular tracks that became fan favorites. “Love Me Tonight” is noted as a live singalong anthem, while ballads like “Shade Of Blue” and “Sail Alone” showcase the band’s melodic prowess and emotional depth. The album also benefited from guest contributions by notable musicians such as Yoshikazu Matsuura (Prism, RAMU) and Seishiro Kusunose.

K-12518 captures Blizard evolving their sound, moving towards a more direct hard rock approach while maintaining strong songwriting and musicianship. “Hot Shot!” remains a highly regarded album, showcasing a different facet of the band’s talent and containing some of their most popular songs.
