The Birth of Power Pop Perfection: Cheap Trick’s “In Color”

Some albums are so perfectly crafted that they sound like an instant greatest hits collection, and that is certainly the case with the brilliant second album from the Illinois rock legends, Cheap Trick. We are looking at their 1977 masterpiece, “In Color,” on the Epic label with the catalog number PE 34884.

Following their raw, energetic debut, “In Color” was the album that defined the Cheap Trick sound. The band took their unique blend of Beatles-esque melodies, hard rock muscle, and quirky humor and polished it to a radio-friendly shine. The result was a landmark album in the development of what would be known as power pop.

From the opening chords of “Hello There,” the album is a relentless barrage of perfectly constructed rock and roll songs. It contains some of the band’s most iconic and beloved tracks, including the dreamy, yearning “I Want You to Want Me” and the soaring anthem “Southern Girls.” Each song is a masterclass in pop songwriting, packed with unforgettable hooks, clever lyrics from Rick Nielsen, and Robin Zander’s incredible vocals, which could handle both sweet melodies and powerful rock screams with ease.

While the production, handled by Tom Werman, was famously cleaner and more polished than the band’s ferocious live sound, it was this very polish that revealed the sheer brilliance of the songwriting underneath. It allowed the incredible melodies and clever arrangements to shine through, creating a sound that was both tough and irresistibly catchy. Though the band would achieve global stardom with the live versions of these songs on “At Budokan,” this is where those classics were born.

For any fan of power pop, classic rock, or just perfectly written rock and roll songs, “In Color” is an absolutely essential, cornerstone album. It’s a timeless record full of wit, energy, and masterful pop craftsmanship. You can find this classic album in our store or on our website.
