Few bands have defined the sound of sophisticated Album-Oriented Rock (AOR) quite like Toto. A prime example of their masterful craft is their 1988 album, “The Seventh One,” and we’re looking at the Japanese pressing released on CBS/Sony with the catalog number 28AP 5001.
By the time they released their seventh studio album, Toto were already global superstars, a band comprised of some of the most skilled and sought-after session musicians in the world. “The Seventh One” saw the return of original lead vocalist Joseph Williams, and his voice fits the material perfectly, soaring over the band’s intricate arrangements and polished production.
The album is a masterclass in late-80s AOR. It’s packed with radio-friendly hits, soulful ballads, and showcases of the band’s incredible musicianship. The opening track, “Pamela,” became one of the album’s biggest hits, a perfectly crafted pop-rock song with an unforgettable chorus and a brilliant horn section. Another highlight is the powerful ballad “Anna,” which features a beautiful vocal performance from Williams and Steve Lukather. The record also features guest appearances from music legends like Linda Ronstadt and Jon Anderson of Yes.
From start to finish, the album is a testament to the band’s impeccable songwriting and arranging skills. The production is pristine, allowing every instrument to shine, from Jeff Porcaro’s incredibly tight drumming to David Paich’s lush keyboard textures and Steve Lukather’s virtuosic guitar work.
This Japanese pressing is a fantastic way to experience the album, known for its high-quality vinyl and mastering, which brings out the incredible detail in the production. For any fan of classic AOR, 80s pop-rock, or simply phenomenal musicianship, “The Seventh One” is a cornerstone album and an essential part of any collection. You can find this pristine example in our store or on our website.
