Shedding the Makeup, Embracing the Rock: Killer May’s ‘Sangre’ (RT28-5162)

Let’s explore the third studio album from the Japanese rock band Killer May, titled “Sangre.” Released on April 6, 1989, via the Eastworld label (Toshiba EMI), this 12-inch vinyl LP carries the catalog number RT28-5162. The copy highlighted here is a promotional sample pressing, indicated by its white labels.

“Sangre” arrived during a period of evolution for Killer May. Known for their earlier glam hard rock stylings, this album is described as showcasing a move towards a simpler, more direct rock ‘n’ roll sound, akin to a street rock band shedding some of their previous visual extravagance. Produced by Yoshinao Momoi and Yoshiyuki Ohno, the album delivers high-energy rock across its tracks.

This album holds significant historical interest as it features the formidable talents of guitarist Emma (Hideaki Kikuchi) and drummer Annie (Eiji Kikuchi) before they achieved massive fame as members of the legendary rock band The Yellow Monkey. Their musicianship, alongside vocalist Reino and bassist Touch, drives the album’s sound, often drawing comparisons to bands like Aerosmith for its rock ‘n’ roll swagger.

“Sangre” also boasts notable guest appearances, including guitar contributions from Mitsuhiro Saito (Bow Wow) on two tracks and lyrics/chorus from Panta (Brain Police) on another, further enriching the album’s texture. RT28-5162 captures Killer May transitioning their sound while showcasing the burgeoning talents of future rock icons. For collectors, the promotional status adds extra rarity to this snapshot of late 80s Japanese rock.
