The Sound of a Band at War: Black Sabbath’s “Sabotage”
By 1975, Black Sabbath was a band under immense pressure, embroiled in legal battles that threatened to tear them apart. They channeled that rage and frustration into their music, creating what is arguably their most aggressive, complex, and powerful album of the classic era: “Sabotage.” We’re looking at a Japanese pressing of this masterpiece, reissued as part of the “Super Masters” series on the Spectrum label with the catalog number SP18-5015.
“Sabotage” is a stunning and ferocious album that finds the band pushing their sound to its absolute limits. It represents a perfect synthesis of their earlier, sludgy doom-laden style with the more experimental and progressive leanings they had developed on previous albums. The result is a record that is both brutally heavy and incredibly sophisticated.
From the crushing, iconic opening riff of “Hole in the Sky,” the album is a relentless sonic assault. The songs are dynamic and multi-layered, with Tony Iommi’s guitar work reaching new heights of creativity. Tracks like the epic “Megalomania” and the sprawling “The Writ” are complex, multi-part suites that shift between moments of sheer fury and passages of haunting beauty. Geezer Butler’s lyrics are at their most biting and personal, directly addressing the legal and managerial turmoil that inspired the album’s title.
Yet, “Sabotage” is also an incredibly diverse album. It features the hypnotic, synthesizer-driven instrumental “Don’t Start (Too Late)” and the surprisingly melodic, Beatles-esque “Am I Going Insane (Radio).” At the center of it all is Ozzy Osbourne, delivering what might be the most powerful and varied vocal performance of his entire career with the band.
This Japanese “Super Masters” series pressing is a fantastic way to hear the incredible detail and power of the album’s production. For any fan of Black Sabbath or 70s heavy rock, “Sabotage” is an absolutely essential listen. It is the sound of a legendary band fighting for their survival and creating a masterpiece in the process. You can find this classic album in our store or on our website.
