The Reign of the Metal Witch Continues: Misako Honjoh’s ‘13TH’ (TL-3)

Let’s explore the second chapter in the influential “Witch Trilogy” from pioneering Japanese female metal vocalist Misako Honjoh. This entry focuses on her sophomore album, “13TH,” released on Teichiku Records with the catalog number TL-3.

Issued in 1983, this 10-track, 12-inch vinyl LP arrived hot on the heels of her powerful debut, “Messiah’s Blessing.” “13TH” continued to solidify Honjoh’s place as a leading figure in the burgeoning Japanese heavy metal scene, delivering another potent dose of classic, powerful heavy metal.

A crucial element defining the sound and significance of “13TH” is the heavy involvement of members from the legendary band Loudness. Guitar virtuoso Akira Takasaki not only provided his signature guitar work but also served as the album’s sound producer and arranged most of the tracks, significantly shaping its direction. Furthermore, the thunderous rhythm section is composed entirely of Loudness members: Munetaka Higuchi on drums and Masayoshi Yamashita on bass.

This powerhouse backing ensures a high-caliber heavy metal assault throughout the album. It features heavy riffs, blistering solos, a driving rhythm foundation, and Honjoh’s soaring vocals delivering lyrics penned by Tomoko Aran across tracks like “Endless Chain,” “Distraction,” “Black Wizard,” and “Love Me Forever” (music co-written by Yamashita). Additional contributions include keyboards by Toshio Egawa (known for work with Terra Rosa, etc.) and backing vocals from members of Loudness and X-Ray.

“13TH” (TL-3) stands as a prime example of early 80s J-Metal, heavily influenced and supported by the biggest names in the scene. It’s an essential album for fans of Misako Honjoh, Loudness, and the classic era of Japanese heavy metal.
