Eye of the Storm: Loudness’ US Release of ‘Hurricane Eyes’ (790 619-1)
Today we revisit Japanese metal legends Loudness and their pivotal 1987 album, “Hurricane Eyes.” This entry focuses specifically on the US vinyl pressing released by Atco Records, carrying the catalog number 790 619-1. This particular copy also retains its original hype sticker on the outer shrinkwrap.
Released in 1987 for the American and international markets, this version of “Hurricane Eyes” features vocals sung entirely in English by Minoru Niihara. It was produced by the renowned Neil Kernon (Dokken, Queensrÿche), who gave the album a powerful, polished, and distinctly Western-market-friendly sound, differing from the Japanese-language version produced by Eddie Kramer.
The album showcases the classic Loudness lineup at the height of their international fame: Niihara’s soaring vocals, Akira Takasaki’s breathtaking guitar mastery, Masayoshi Yamashita’s rock-solid bass, and Munetaka Higuchi’s dynamic drumming. Kernon’s production emphasized the band’s potent heavy metal sound while adding a radio-friendly edge. It includes iconic tracks like the blistering opener “S.D.I.” and the melodic anthem “This Lonely Heart.”
790 619-1 represents Loudness’ continued push for global success following “Thunder in the East” and “Lightning Strikes.” It’s a high point in their 80s output, capturing their world-class musicianship tailored for an international audience. The presence of the original hype sticker on the shrinkwrap makes this copy especially desirable for collectors.
