Striking the Global Stage Again: Loudness’ ‘Lightning Strikes’ (90512-1)
Today we focus on the international version of a pivotal mid-80s album from Japanese heavy metal giants Loudness. This is “Lightning Strikes,” specifically the US vinyl pressing released on Atco Records with the catalog number 90512-1 with hype sticker.
Issued in 1986, this 12-inch LP was the American and international counterpart to their Japanese album “Shadows of War.” Following the groundbreaking success of “Thunder in the East” in the US market, “Lightning Strikes” continued the band’s global campaign. Like its predecessor, it was produced by Max Norman and featured vocals performed entirely in English, tailored for the Western audience.
The album delivers the signature Loudness sound that had captivated international fans: a potent combination of high-energy heavy metal, technically dazzling guitar work, powerful vocals with memorable melodic hooks, and a thunderous rhythm section, all wrapped in Norman’s polished, arena-ready production. It contains the English-language versions of tracks that originated on “Shadows of War,” further showcasing their world-class musicianship and songwriting.
90512-1 represents Loudness solidifying their presence on the international stage. “Lightning Strikes” was another successful step in bringing Japanese heavy metal to a global audience, demonstrating the band’s consistent power and skill. It remains an essential album documenting their peak international era.
