Forging Ahead: Anthem’s ‘Bound to Break’ (K28P655)
Today we revisit Japanese heavy metal stalwarts Anthem, focusing on their powerhouse third studio album, “Bound to Break,” released with the catalog number K28P655.
Issued in 1987 on the Nexus label (King Records), this 12-inch vinyl LP arrived during a period of intense creative output and solidified Anthem’s position at the forefront of the J-Metal scene. Following their explosive self-titled debut and the strong follow-up “Tightrope,” “Bound to Break” showcased a band operating at peak power with their classic early lineup.
The album delivers pure, high-energy, traditional heavy metal. It’s packed with the signature elements that defined Anthem’s sound: blistering guitar riffs and solos, driving, intricate basslines anchoring the rhythm, powerful drumming, and soaring, high-pitched vocals delivering anthemic choruses. “Bound to Break” is a relentless display of speed, power, and melodic sensibility, representing the quintessential 80s J-Metal sound executed with precision and passion.
K28P655 captures Anthem at the height of their initial charge. “Bound to Break” is considered by many fans to be a classic, filled with essential tracks that cemented their legacy as one of Japan’s finest heavy metal exports. It remains a must-have for enthusiasts of the genre.
