A very special compilation from the Japanese hard rock band Night Hawks is the focus for this entry. We are looking at “The Midnight Hawks,” released in 1994 on the Sony Records label with the catalog number SRCL 2901.
This CD is a “Best Selection” album, gathering highlights from the band’s period on Sony Records. What makes this release particularly unique is its production and curation: the song selection and production were handled by Toshi, the legendary vocalist of X Japan.
Reflecting Toshi’s hard rock tastes, the 12-track compilation leans heavily on the band’s more aggressive, driving songs. It’s considered an excellent “first album” for new fans, as it contains many of their essential tracks from the era, including the powerful opener “Breath Of Fire.”
Furthermore, “The Midnight Hawks” is a key release for collectors as it includes two songs, “Shout” and “Looming,” which were not available on their other albums. SRCL 2901 stands as a fascinating document, capturing the hard-hitting sound of Night Hawks as curated by one of J-Rock’s most iconic figures.
