A Polished Return: X Japan’s ‘Rusty Nail’ Single (AMDM-6115)
Today’s entry focuses on a major single release from the legendary Japanese rock band X Japan, marking a significant point in their mid-90s evolution. We are looking at the single “Rusty Nail,” released on the Atlantic label (EastWest Japan) with the catalog number AMDM-6115.
Issued on July 10, 1994, this release came in the popular 3-inch mini CD single format common in Japan during that era. “Rusty Nail” arrived after a period following their previous major album (“Jealousy”) and showcased a slight shift towards a more polished, contemporary rock sound, incorporating prominent synthesizer melodies alongside their signature heavy rock power.
The single features two tracks:
1. Rusty Nail
2. Rusty Nail (Original Karaoke)
Produced by Yoshiki, the song features the classic X Japan lineup of the time: Toshi on vocals, hide and Pata on guitars, Heath (in one of his earlier single appearances with the band) on bass, and Yoshiki on drums, piano, and voice. The track was recorded across several studios, including the renowned One On One Studios in the US, and mixed by Mick Ging, indicating a high-quality production aimed at both domestic and potentially international ears. “Rusty Nail” became one of X Japan’s most recognizable and enduring hits.
AMDM-6115 represents a key single from X Japan’s later period, showcasing their ability to blend heavy rock intensity with strong melodies and sophisticated production, resulting in a massive commercial success.
