A Foundational Roar: X’s ‘Vanishing Vision’ (EXC-001)

Let’s revisit a truly pivotal moment in Japanese rock history with the debut album from X (later X Japan), “Vanishing Vision.” This entry focuses on the 1991 CD reissue, released on the band’s own independent label, Extasy Records, with the catalog number EXC-001. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.

Originally released on vinyl in 1988, “Vanishing Vision” was a groundbreaking album. It was the band’s first full-length statement, self-produced and released on their own label, bypassing the traditional industry path.

The album unleashes X’s revolutionary sound in its rawest form: a ferocious blend of speed metal, thrash, and heavy metal, combined with intricate arrangements and surprisingly melodic elements. It captures the classic early lineup of Toshi (vocals), hide (guitar), Pata (guitar), Taiji (bass), and Yoshiki (drums, piano).

This 9-track album is packed with raw energy and early versions of songs that would become legendary. It includes “Vanishing Love,” “Phantom Of Guilt,” “Sadistic Desire,” “I’ll Kill You,” “Alive,” and the original, predominantly English-lyric version of their iconic anthem, “Kurenai.”

EXC-001 is a legendary artifact, capturing the untamed, revolutionary spirit of X as they ignited a musical movement. For collectors and fans, this 1991 CD reissue represents an essential piece of Japanese rock history, documenting the raw genesis of X Japan.
