A Monumental Debut: Vandenberg’s Self-Titled Classic (WPCR-14248)
Today’s entry takes us back to the dawn of a Dutch hard rock legend with the self-titled debut album from Vandenberg. We are looking at the 2011 Japanese limited edition reissue, released by ATCO Records / Warner Music Japan as part of the “Warner Hard Rock 1500” series with the catalog number WPCR-14248. This copy comes complete with its original obi strip.
Originally released in 1982, this album is widely regarded as a “monumental masterpiece” that opened a new chapter in hard rock history. It introduced the world to the “Star of the Netherlands,” guitarist Adrian Vandenberg, and his band’s blend of heavy, hard-driving rhythms and sweeping, melodic sensibilities.
The album is anchored by the immortal power ballad “Burning Heart,” a track that remains a genre staple. However, the quality runs deep across the entire record, featuring fantastic hard rock numbers like “Back On My Feet,” “Wait,” “Too Late,” “Ready For You,” and the closing track “Out In The Streets.”
The primary draw is undoubtedly Adrian Vandenberg’s guitar work. His unique, emotive “crying” guitar style is on full display here, with many fans arguing that his playing in this band surpasses his later work with Whitesnake. While perhaps slightly rawer than their polished follow-up (Heading For A Storm), this debut lays the crucial groundwork for their sound.
This specific reissue features 2008 remastered audio, ensuring a great listening experience. WPCR-14248 is a brilliant way to own this classic debut, packaged with the quality and attention to detail typical of Japanese releases.
