Symphonic Legends: Uli Jon Roth’s ‘Under A Dark Sky’ (MICP-10755)
Today’s entry spotlights a monumental work from the German guitar legend, Uli Jon Roth. We are looking at the 2008 Japanese pressing of “Under A Dark Sky,” released on the Avalon label (Marquee Inc.) with the catalog number MICP-10755. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.
Released on August 20, 2008, this album served as the first official release in his long-awaited “Symphonic Legends” series, part of the expansive Sky of Avalon project. It marked a significant return to a rock-oriented format for Roth, albeit one heavily infused with his signature neo-classical and symphonic vision. The album plays out as a grand rock opera, blending hard rock instrumentation with orchestral arrangements to tell a conceptual story about humanity and the Earth.
A major highlight of this release is the vocal performance. Roth recruited the powerful Mark Boals (Yngwie Malmsteen, Royal Hunt) and Liz Vandall (Sahara) to handle lead vocals. This choice was widely praised by fans, as it allowed the music’s potential to be fully realized, providing a professional and emotive delivery that complements the complex compositions.
Naturally, the album features Roth’s distinct Sky Guitar playing—at times gentle, at times fierce—weaving through tracks like “The Magic Word,” “Land Of Dawn,” and the massive 19-minute closing suite “Tanz In Die Dämmerung.”
MICP-10755 is a high-quality Japanese production. It captures a unique moment where a guitar master merged rock with a grand symphonic scope, creating a deep, spiritual, and melodic journey that stands apart from standard heavy metal releases.
