A Melodic Masterpiece Reborn: Masquerade’s Self-Titled Debut (MICP-11184)
Today’s entry spotlights a true gem from the Scandinavian melodic hard rock scene: the self-titled debut album by Masquerade. We are looking at the 2014 Japanese reissue, released on the Avalon label (Marquee Inc.) as part of “The Legendary Master Works Scandinavian Metal Collection” series. This CD carries the catalog number MICP-11184 and includes the original obi strip.
Originally released in 1992, this album is highly revered among AOR and hard rock collectors for its immaculate production and songwriting. Hailing from Sweden, the band was driven by the talents of guitarist and songwriter Thomas G:son, who would go on to become a prolific and world-renowned composer in the pop world (famous for writing numerous Eurovision hits).
“Masquerade” delivers a sophisticated blend of hard rock energy and AOR melodies, characterized by lush keyboards, driving guitars, and catchy choruses. Tracks like “Gimme All Your Love,” “Sudden Love Affair,” and “Dancin’ On The Edge” perfectly encapsulate the “lyrical” and high-quality sound associated with the Nordic metal scene of the era.
This 2014 remastered edition is the definitive version for collectors. It significantly expands on the original 14-track listing by including five bonus demo tracks: “Stop,” “Main Attraction,” “Ride With The Wind,” “Lonely Cry,” and “Give It Shot.” MICP-11184 offers the complete experience of this Swedish classic, polished for modern ears.
