Global Divas Reimagined: Eric Martin’s ‘Mr. Vocalist 2’ (SICP 2148)
Today’s entry spotlights the second installment in the highly successful cover album series by Eric Martin, the celebrated voice of Mr. Big. We are looking at “Mr. Vocalist 2,” released in Japan on March 4, 2009, via Sony Records Int’l with the catalog number SICP 2148. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.
Following the explosive success of the first “Mr. Vocalist” album, which featured English covers of Japanese female artists, this sequel shifted the focus to the global stage. “Mr. Vocalist 2” sees Martin interpreting iconic ballads originally made famous by international female divas. The tracklist was notably influenced by fan voting, a first for a Western artist in this market at the time.
The album features Martin’s soulful, husky voice taking on massive hits like Mariah Carey’s “Hero,” Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” and Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.” A highlight of the album is his cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time,” which features a guest appearance by the renowned ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro.
Fans have praised this album for being respectful to the original melodies while allowing Martin’s vocal character to shine, particularly on tracks like The Carpenters’ “Superstar.” SICP 2148 is a polished collection of AOR and pop-rock ballads, perfect for listeners who want to hear one of hard rock’s best singers in a mellower, vocal-focused setting.
