Reaching New Heights: DragonForce’s ‘Reaching Into Infinity’ (WPCR-17718)

Today’s entry spotlights the seventh studio album from the UK’s masters of melodic speed metal, DragonForce. We are looking at the Japanese pressing of “Reaching Into Infinity,” released on May 17, 2017, via Warner Music Japan with the catalog number WPCR-17718. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.

Released in Japan ahead of the rest of the world, this album marked a significant evolution in the band’s sound. While maintaining their signature high-speed “hypersonic” delivery, the album is noted for being more diverse and melody-oriented than its predecessors. Much of this shift is attributed to bassist Frédéric Leclercq, who took on a major songwriting role for this record.

The album explores new territories, ranging from the classic DragonForce speed of “Ashes Of The Dawn” and “Midnight Madness” to the thrash/hardcore intensity of “War!” and the band’s longest, most progressive track to date, “The Edge Of The World,” which even incorporates death metal elements. Vocalist Marc Hudson delivers a commanding performance throughout, with many fans noting his growth and range on this release.

For collectors, this Japanese edition is essential due to its exclusive bonus track. Track 12 is a high-speed power metal cover of “Gloria,” the enduring hit song by the legendary Japanese rock band ZIGGY. This unique cover makes WPCR-17718 a standout release, capturing a British band paying homage to Japanese rock history with their own extreme flair.
