A Historic Reunion: Unisonic’s Self-Titled Debut (MICP-11040)

Today’s entry spotlights a monumental release for power metal fans: the self-titled debut album from the supergroup Unisonic. We are looking at the 2012 Japanese pressing, released on the Avalon label with the catalog number MICP-11040. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.

Released on March 21, 2012, this album was a headline-making event in the metal world. It marked the first full studio collaboration between legendary vocalist Michael Kiske and guitarist Kai Hansen since their days in Helloween’s classic “Keeper of the Seven Keys” era. They were joined by an elite lineup including Mandy Meyer (Asia, Gotthard), Dennis Ward, and Kosta Zafiriou (both of Pink Cream 69).

While the Kiske-Hansen reunion led many to expect a return to pure speed metal, “Unisonic” delivers a more mature, melodic hard rock sound. It blends the high-speed energy of the opening title track with polished, hard-pop sensibilities found in songs like “Souls Alive” and “Never Too Late.” It has been compared to Kiske’s work with Place Vendome but with a brighter, more band-oriented energy.

The album showcases Kiske’s voice remaining in pristine condition, particularly on the moving ballad “No One Ever Sees Me.” This Japanese edition is the definitive version for collectors, featuring the bonus track “The Morning After” inserted into the tracklist. MICP-11040 is a celebration of melodic rock mastery, capturing a historic reunion that lived up to the hype in its own unique way.
